What is the difference between forged and billet?

While most modern aftermarket pistons are forged, the MIL.SPEC high compression pistons are actually fully CNC machined out of a solid block of high quality 2618-T6 aluminum. What does this mean? Well, it means a combination of lighter weight and higher strength.
The pistons feature internal and external bracing for improved durability and strength. A custom designed crown means proper squish on a high compression piston. Unlike forged pistons, the billet pistons are machined on every surface allowing for all unnecessary weight to be removed during manufacturing. These pistons, on the Evo 8/9 application in particular, weigh ~25 grams less than similar forged units at 262 grams per piston. Combine that with lighter rods and the weight savings really add up.
The pistons come standard with a ceramic coating on the top and a friction-reducing coating on the piston skirts:
